Democracy as a model for organizations

I attended and presented at the WorldBlu forum this week in Washington DC. It was a lively few days of interesting speakers and engaging conversations.

What struck me about my time at the conference was how engaged this small but mighty band was in exploring ways to evolve our paradigms for structures and relationships within organizations. It will be interesting to see what comes of the idea swapping...

Some of the examples shared include:

  • GE's Durham plant, operating in self-regulating teams (a very 'information age' model) while constructing a very 'industrial age' product

  • Southwest Airlines' passionate committment to making work fun and allowing all voices to be heard

  • Argentine workers who have taken over factories and businesses and are running them based on equal votes

  • And, of course, my own home: Point B and the unique model for self-directed careers and choices about work-life balance

Over the next few days, I'll post some of the key take aways or ideas I enjoyed.
